Nenad Medic wins $1.7 million at the WPT World Poker Final Main Event
E. G. Harvin, a 58 year old amateur from West Palm Beach was the story of the event, his $150 buy in from a satellite event gained him an impressive pay cheque of $904,389. He had led the field pretty much most of the 4 day event and his play at the final table took out most of the other players, his aggressive style which he used throughout the tournament dominated the tables he played and at the television table eliminated 4 players in succession. The winner of the event commented "This guy (Harvin) did all the work for me, I had a decent stack going in and I was able to sit back and pick my spots. I liked my chances and felt good about the way I played today." The final heads-up hand saw a flop of 5-5-3 into which the aggressive Harvin bet out $500,000 that was called by Nenad, the turn brought a 9 and Harvin bet out a further $1,000,000 that was called again by Nenad. The river dealt a 9 and Harvin moved all-in, Nenad deliberated for around a minute before calling and showing a 5 for a full house and the tournament win. "I don't know why it took me so long to call, I was 90 percent sure I was going to call," Nenad said. "I just wanted to make sure. It was a big moment." The final featured two of pokers biggest female players and is the only WPT final table to have two female players, Kathy Liebert and high stakes cash game player Mimi Tran. Kathy was eliminated first after making a flush and moving all in to be called by the nut flush of Harvin and was eliminated in fifth place. Mimi Tran was eliminated in 3rd, she played super aggressive three handed, raising nearly every hand pre-flop, she was knocked out after tangling with Harvin twice and losing both times finally going out to a pair of aces. The final table finishes and payouts Nenad Medic - $1,717,194 EG Harvin - $904,389 Thithi "Mimi" Tran - $472,228 Michael Omelchuk - $343,439 Kathy Liebert - $257,579 Michael Perry - $200,340 |
